Duration: One year program (2 semesters each year).

Required Hours: A total of 255 hours.

Required Units: A total of 5 courses (4 core mandatory and 1 electives).

This program is aimed at providing the student with a comprehensive understanding of Sanskrit language and literature. The varied courses are aimed at offering expertise to the student in different periods and genres of Sanskrit literature. It contains some of the finest texts in each genre thereby providing a deep understanding of each genre. It also provides the necessary critical tools with which the student gauges the prominence and excellence in each of these texts. The program also provides insights into the cultural and historical evolution of the period between 11th to 20th century vis a vis the literary texts of those ages.

General Admission Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Certificate in Sanskrit Language from UofSA or a score of 75% or above in the Assessment Examination for Diploma Course conducted by UofSA.

Required Core Courses

  • DSL 301: Meghaduta of Kalidasa – 3 Texts – 3 credit units.
  • DSL 302: Introduction to Ba.a and Bhavabhuti – 3 credit units
  • DSL 303: Introduction to Magha – 3 credit units
  • DSL 304: Introduction to Thrivikramabhatta and Playwright Kalidasa -3 credit units

Elective Courses (select 1)

  • DSL 401: Introduction to Poetics of Sanskrit – 3 credit units
  • DSL 402: Introduction to Sanskrit Grammar – 3 credit units

Evaluation

The evaluation has the following components:

  • Final exam at the end of each course
  • Mid Term exam in the middle of a course
  • Assignment
  • Quizzes

Students will be awarded the diploma in Sanskrit after they earn an overall combined GPA of 2.0 based on the evaluation weightages across the various methods/metrics.
